Leah moved to North Dakota when she was 12 years old and has traveled from the Red River Valley to the badlands and many places in between. She loves small-town life and currently enjoys living on a small farm in the ND prairie. She's always had a passion for writing and has participated in novel writing challenges such as NaNoWriMo multiple times. Her favorite part about this job is recognizing small businesses that deserve a boost and seeing the positive affect her articles can have on their traffic, especially in rural areas that might have otherwise gone overlooked.
It’s not a secret that North Dakota isn’t known for having waterfalls. In fact, the state only has one actual natural waterfall that is hidden deep within a forest that not many people have seen. It certainly doesn’t have something as big and majestic as the Niagara Falls in New York and Canada, but that doesn’t mean we as North Dakotans can’t appreciate what we do have. And what we do have is actually quite pretty! These falls in one of the state parks may not be huge, but they are our Niagara Falls and are perfect in their own way. Take a look:
These lovely little falls are located in North Dakota's Turtle River State Park, located near the town of Arvilla or about 22 miles west of Grand Forks.
As you'd expect, the park is located along the scenic Turtle River as it winds through the forest. You can find gorgeous views like this among the trails, bridges, and campsites.
One thing that sets this state park apart from the rest is that it has a waterfall, curved around in a U-like shape similar to Niagara Falls. It's actually created from a dam called the CCC Dam.
Hang out in the CCC picnic shelter right next to the sounds of the rushing water as they gently cascade over the stones. It's the perfect place to eat lunch on a sunny afternoon. You could even sit along side it and dip your feet into the cool, rushing water.
Even in the winter this place is as magical as ever, like a scene from a dream. It's the only thing like it in all of North Dakota, and it's worth visiting!
You can visit Turtle River State Park at 3084 Park Ave., Arvilla, ND 58214. This part of the river can be reached by parking at the CCC shelter or taking the Woodchuck Trail. For more information about the park, click here.
