Leah moved to North Dakota when she was 12 years old and has traveled from the Red River Valley to the badlands and many places in between. She loves small-town life and currently enjoys living on a small farm in the ND prairie. She's always had a passion for writing and has participated in novel writing challenges such as NaNoWriMo multiple times. Her favorite part about this job is recognizing small businesses that deserve a boost and seeing the positive affect her articles can have on their traffic, especially in rural areas that might have otherwise gone overlooked.
Who says you can’t have donuts multiple times a day? They aren’t just a breakfast pastry – they can be a treat for any time. If you’re a donut lover who wants to partake in some of North Dakota’s finest bakeries and donut shops, we’ve got just the trip for you. It’ll take you on a day trip around part of the state to try out some of the best donuts you’ve ever had. Let’s do it!
The North Dakota donut trail we've put together will take you about 3 hours of driving time to complete and is primarily in the Red River Valley. Click here for a full interactive map for directions. This trip will start in West Fargo.
Our first stop is Sandy's Donuts & Coffee Shop at their original location in West Fargo. This spot has topped the donuts list in North Dakota year after year and people go crazy over their donuts. There is always a huge variety of kinds but you'll want to make sure you get here early before the display cases start emptying.
Our next stop is a good place to fuel up for the rest of the drive as well as get another donut fix. Tower Travel Center in Tower City, just a short ways west of Fargo, has an amazing bakery. Though they are most known for their homemade pies, you can also get massive donut holes, cinnamon rolls, caramel rolls, and many other delicious baked goods. Pick your favorite, fill the tank, and get back on the road for our next stop.
The old Soholt Bakery in the charming town of Mayville, ND serves up amazing donuts and is our next stop. They've been around for a whopping 100 years and continue to be a favorite for people far and wide. Their cake donuts are made from scratch and taste of it, too - delicious, homemade goodness! No matter what type of donut you like best, you'll love Soholt's.
Our final donut stop for the day before most of the bakeries start to close in the afternoon is Welch's Bakery in Park River. Welch's brings people in from miles around to try their fantastic donuts. Their donut twists are quite the favorite, but pretty much anything you get here will get you instantly hooked. They make for a great end to the donut day trip, and you'll want to take at least a dozen home to enjoy afterwards.
By the end of this trip you’ll be wishing you could do it every day! North Dakota’s bakeries produce some downright tasty treats, that’s for sure. All the addresses of these places can be found on the trip map.
Not enough donuts for you? North Dakota has bakeries all across the state, and you can find more right here.
