Leah moved to North Dakota when she was 12 years old and has traveled from the Red River Valley to the badlands and many places in between. She loves small-town life and currently enjoys living on a small farm in the ND prairie. She's always had a passion for writing and has participated in novel writing challenges such as NaNoWriMo multiple times. Her favorite part about this job is recognizing small businesses that deserve a boost and seeing the positive affect her articles can have on their traffic, especially in rural areas that might have otherwise gone overlooked.
The painted canyons in North Dakota’s one and only national park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, are a true natural wonder. While the photographs of the colorful, rugged terrain are pretty to look at, they’re only photos. There is no better way to experience this area than in person, where you can fully appreciate their scale and natural beauty. Luckily for us, there is a lesser-known spot that will take you to the best and easiest canyon overlook trail in North Dakota.
See the majesty of the badlands for yourself, up close and in person, from this easy-to-reach vantage point in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park South Unit.
The Boicourt Overlook Trail is quick, good for all skill levels, and partially paved making it accessible for everyone. And just look at the view you'll get rewarded with:
The trail is easily completed in only 15 minutes, continuing after the paved part (which has great views on its own) to the top of a ridge with more expansive sights.
The winding dirt path leads to a spot that is definitely worth bringing a camera for. At the top of the hill, you can see for miles and enjoy the unique terrain of the North Dakota badlands.
These formations have been built up and eroded down for thousands upon thousands of years, giving us the opportunity to see them in such a uniquely beautiful state on an easy trail like Boicourt.
The trail is best taken from April through October when the prairie flora is lush and green, contrasting with the rocks and creating a stunning sight for all to see on one easy, yet lesser-known trail.
The Boicourt Overlook Trail can be accessed by taking the Scenic Loop Drive in the park. You can find more information about this trail and the rest of the trails in Theodore Roosevelt National Park by visiting this website.
