Sitting out in the middle of nowhere in North Dakota is a crazy sight you’d never expect to see. This massive, abandoned structure towers over the surrounding fields like some sort of monument, and yet barely anyone knows it is there. Take a look at this bizarre place and learn about the equally weird story behind it. This state is full of surprises!
This massive pyramid, officially known as the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex, stands just outside of the tiny town Nekoma, ND.
The town only has a population of 50 residents and they all have an interesting neighbor to look at. The pyramid-like structure was built in 1975 but was barely operational before being deactivated.
It had control of 100 different anti-ballistic missiles, all stored underground and controlled from the pyramid itself. Today, all of this is sealed off and has been left mostly abandoned. The concrete pads are cracking, yet the pyramid remains.
The complex was sold at auction and since then, not much has been done with it. The pyramid is still there and so are the sealed off missile silos. It has turned into a sort of monument to the past. A really bizarre, unexpected monument, that is, here in North Dakota.
Check out this video below by YouTuber Kyle Gagner that has great aerial drone footage of the pyramid along with some information about it:
It is almost creepy in its own way, like something from a dystopian future movie. It will probably stand for many years to come!
