As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
When it comes to the best places to stay in North Dakota, you really can’t get a whole lot more epic than a weekend (or longer) in the stunning small town of Medora – which just so happens to be a town nestled within a National Park. And when I tell you this place is an adventure, I mean it’s an adventure: you would want to take no less than two days to explore the park on its own! Plus, we went ahead and found the perfect vacation home rental near Theodore Roosevelt National Park to call home while you do it; check it out and plan your adventure ASAP:
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a 70,440-acre chunk of some of the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery you'll ever experience.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota, USA
After all, Theodore Roosevelt National Park literally got its name from the fact that when President Teddy Roosevelt first visited the area, he was absolutely transfixed. He fell in love with it immediately and bought a ranch that is now part of the park.
It is so immensely vast that, if you want to explore it all, I recommend no less than two days' time.

The park is home to all sorts of amazing things to do, see, and experience - including 33 amazing hiking trails like the world-famous Caprock Coulee Loop Trail, which is just under four-and-a-half miles long and a perfect introduction to the wonders contained here. Personally, I would spend the first day exploring the trails and enjoying the awesome scenic drives within the park.

Of course, while you're here, you're going to need a home base - so why not check out this absolutely stunning vacation home rental near Theodore Roosevelt National Park?
With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, it's the perfect escape for a family, a group of friends, or, if you please, a luxurious solo outing. Be sure to check out the official VRBO listing to book your stay (and I recommend doing it well in advance - this one books up fast).
On day two, I suggest checking out the must-sees of the park, like the truly majestic (and still somehow alien) Petrified Forest, which is actually the third-highest concentration of petrified wood in the nation.
Petrified Forest, North Billings, ND 58645, USA
Painted Canyon Visitor Center, Exit 32, Belfield, ND, USA
Cannonball Concretions Pullout, Grassy Butte, ND 58634, USA
Other than Petrified Forest, must-see features of this awesome North Dakota National Park include incredible overlooks, like the famed Painted Canyon Overlook, other geological wonders like the Cannonball Concretions (as well as general natural wonders like an absolutely incredible dark sky at night, perfect for stargazing).
The town of Medora - which is nestled inside the park and hosts the cabin you'll stay at should you choose to - is a delight, too, with plenty MORE to do and see. Y'know... you might want to take more than a weekend, but that's me.
Rough Riders Hotel, 301 3rd Ave, Medora, ND 58645, USA
If the cabin isn't quite your thing, you might want to stay at the old Rough Riders Hotel, which is the oldest hotel in the state and used to be a haunt of Teddy Roosevelt himself.
