If you've never experienced visiting a monastery before, you can do so right here in North Dakota at the absolutely gorgeous Assumption Abbey, located on the edge of Richardton, ND.
This spectacular place is beautiful inside and out. Stop by the visitors center and meet the monks who live here. They'll be happy to tell you about the abbey, give information, and send you on a self-guided tour.
Assumption Abbey was founded in the late 1800s and has seen many visitors over the years, and all of them are wowed by impressive architecture and a peaceful atmosphere.
When visiting, you can tour the grounds or even ask about overnight retreats. In the warmer months, the monks tend to gardens and even an orchard and use the food from them to create some of their well-loved products.
You can visit their shop to buy some of these handcrafted, handmade items. They make things like homemade soap, fresh jams and jellies, delicious fruitcake, pottery, and even wine.
With the absolute beauty that is the Assumption Abbey along with its history and friendly residents, this should be on everyone's list of must-see places in North Dakota. It's worth touring at least once!
