Leah moved to North Dakota when she was 12 years old and has traveled from the Red River Valley to the badlands and many places in between. She loves small-town life and currently enjoys living on a small farm in the ND prairie. She's always had a passion for writing and has participated in novel writing challenges such as NaNoWriMo multiple times. Her favorite part about this job is recognizing small businesses that deserve a boost and seeing the positive affect her articles can have on their traffic, especially in rural areas that might have otherwise gone overlooked.
North Dakotans let their true colors shine in this beautiful hidden gem located in the capital city. What could have been just an ordinary alley was transformed into something special — and you don’t want to just walk right by. Take a walk down this alleyway to experience an amazing, totally North Dakotan art gallery:
Halfway in between Broadway and Main Avenue in Bismarck, North Dakota, is a vibrantly colorful alleyway that might just catch your eye. The Alley 5.5, also known as the Bismarck Art Alley, is worth stopping for.
This outdoor art gallery was a project started in 2016 that brought together local artists to transform what was otherwise just a boring alley into an incredible gallery of art pieces. Today, you can still walk the alleyway and see it for yourself.
The theme of the paintings is "reflections of North Dakota," and you'll find plenty of awesome perspectives of our wonderful state throughout the murals. It's a perfect addition to ND's capital city.
From impressive barn quilt-like paintings to a gorgeous array of bits and pieces that characterize the state, it showcases the true beauty and talent found here.
Not every piece is painted — you'll also find things like mosaics adorning the walls, making it all the more fascinating to experience. More than 20 artists have proudly put their marks on these walls for all to see and it's worth checking out.
It may have just started out as a simple alleyway, but now Alley 5.5 is truly a one-of-a-kind spot that you can check out whenever you'd like entirely for free. Plus, it's right in the heart of the downtown area with plenty of other great locations to explore.
It's best seen in person to truly experience the size and amazing skill that went into these pieces, so be sure to add this to your North Dakota bucket list as a must-see at least once.
