Many many years ago, a meteor plummeted to earth, crashing next to modern-day Elizabethtown and forming what is now known as White Lake. Well, that’s one theory on how a crystal clear lake came to be in North Carolina. Another theory is that White Lake is actually a huge spring-fed lake containing artesian water ascending from an unknown depth. With water slowly seeping into the lake (as opposed to all at once) it helps eliminate typical ‘dark material’ found in most lakes. While science is there to explain, our eyes are here to appreciate the beauty. One glance at White Lake and you’ll be stunned at the fact a piece of the Caribbean exists right in North Carolina.
Originally named 'Silver Lake' by Native Americans, White Lake became a high-end vacation destination in the early 1900s. Commercialization and development for the upper class brought many tourists and interest. Another draw was the crystal clear water, making it safe for children to swim. While White Lake had its Gatsby moment, by the late 1900s it dwindled in to a more accessible, laid back getaway spot.
Located near historic Elizabethtown, White Lake possesses plenty of coastal charm like draped spanish moss and sandy shores. While one might be tempted to keep driving an hour or two towards the beach, there's no need when you have island-like vibes right here.
Recreation on the lake includes plenty of docks for jumping off and taking a swim, boating, jet skiing, fishing, a beach for sunbathing or entering the lake and of course - plenty of water for floatin' around and relaxing. There's even a small White Lake waterpark. Every May, White Lake hosts the annual White Lake Water Festival that includes tractor pulls, firemen Olympics, beach bands, a classic car show, arts and crafts, a parade and a 10k run. While the year-round population for the town of White Lake creeps in at just 500, there's a reported 20,000 visitors annually.
Away from the lake you'll find opportunities to take in the beauty. Many rental homes offer large front or back decks facing the lake. Kick back in the swing, stroll on the dock with your sweetie, or even visit nearby Elizabethtown.
White Lake is indeed underrated and is deserving of at least a one-time visit. The turquoise water and crystal shore is a huge plus for families with little swimmers. It's also a great alternative for coastal and inner-banks locals looking to get away from the swell of tourists during the summer season. This truly unique lake is perfect for swimming, relaxing, or even just visiting somewhere new and different.
