North Carolina is home to some outstanding city parks that offer over-the-top outdoor fun. (Recently, we told about a city park with amusement rides for the kiddos. You can read about that here.) When it comes to year-round fun among nature, there is a park in Durham that most people outside of the local neighborhood don’t really know about. But this underrated park is chock full of things to do and is poised you to have a fun-filled, adventurous day with the family. Check it out!
West Point on the Eno, a large park located in Durham, is comprised of 404 acres.
It's found along the Eno River and includes two miles of riverfront access and hours of endless water fun, including fishing, wading, and boat rentals on the weekends.
For families, even though the city doesn't exactly promote swimming in the Eno River...
It's a must-do when temperatures rise. Bring a picnic, some cold beverages — and a towel, if you plan to dip your toes in the water. Just beware there are no lifeguards so it's swim at your own risk here.
A trail system snakes through the park and leads to several points of interest. All of the trails are relatively flat and contain mixed surfaces. They're all considered easy hikes.
The old West Point Mill is a focal point, as is an old homestead (the McKown-Mangum House) and a blacksmith shop.
The prominent West Point Mill operated from 1778 all the way until 1942. Over the more than a century it was in service, it was a community gathering place for the more than 300 families that lived around the mill.
In addition to water activities, hiking, and learning about historic sites around the park, the venue hosts several events each year.
Each year around the Fourth of July, the park is home to the Festival on the Eno event which hosts 80 bands on five stages over a three-day period. (Learn more at this link).
Getting to West Point on the Eno park couldn't be easier. It's located in the most obvious of places: at a major intersection and across the street from the Riverview Shopping Center in Durham.
Whether you live in or near Durham, or not, you’ll want to spend more time at West Point on the Eno. It’s an awesome place to relax and enjoy a day with friends or family!
West Point on the Eno is open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. until dark. Admission is free. Learn more at this link on the official website for the Eno River Association.
