Not many people realize that just a few city blocks from the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in downtown Bryson City, lies an unspoiled island in the middle of the Tuckasegee River – and the only way you can there is on foot.
At the convergence of Bryson and Ramseur Streets, there is a small parking area. Drop the car and head toward the park entrance for a unique way to reconnect with nature in the heart of this charming small town.
Up until a decade or so ago, there was a swinging bridge to navigate in crossing over to the park, known as Bryson City Island Park. A newer, more solid bridge replaced the old and now the trek across the Tuckasegee is much less dicey than in the past.
Once over the bridge and onto the island, locals and visitors alike relish in the calm and peaceful landscape. Regardless of season, this island park is always a beautiful escape.
Trails follow both the perimeter of the island along the water, as well as cutting through the forested areas in the middle of the island. Oftentimes, anglers are spotted here giving the fish in the Tuckasegee River a run for their money.
Bryson City Island Park is located at 213 Bryson St., Bryson City, NC 28713. Admission and parking are free. It is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
