North Carolinians have a fierce amount of loyalty and pride when it comes to our own, including products born in the Tar Heel State. Pepsi Cola, Texas Pete, Cheerwine, and Goody’s Headache Powder are but a few of the most notable of items that got their start here. Another, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, has served to satisfy all-day-long doughnut cravings for generations.
Please note, tours are available for student groups only and must be arranged in advance. Public tours are not available at this time though guests are able to watch the doughnut making process at any time by way of Krispy Kreme’s doughnut theater.
The delicious doughnut venture began in Old Salem in 1937, when Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation rented a space in an old warehouse on Main Street and began delivering doughnuts to local businesses to sell to their customers.
Soon after, the doughnut maker opened their doors to sell hot doughnuts from their warehouse during production times — which were from midnight until 4:00 a.m.
Since 1937, Krispy Kreme's flagship location (store number 101) has moved twice; both locations only a few miles from that original warehouse.
The tour is perfect for school groups and youth groups so round up your dount-lovin' BFFs and be sure to call in advance. (They're not staffed to handle walk-in tours or public tours at this time.)

Unlike days gone by, the Krispy Kreme Flagship tours no longer trek inside the actual kitchen.
The Flagship makes donuts every single day on a set schedule from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and again beginning at 5:00 p.m. until close — seven days a week. Coincidentally, these are also the times when (prescheduled GROUP) tours are given.
While other Krispy Kreme locations make hot glazed doughnuts in-house, the Flagship location also makes the decorated doughnuts, including the delightful seasonal specials!
The production crew at the Flagship store works 24 hours a day making and decorating delectable doughnuts that end up in other Krispy Kreme locations.
To book a group tour, you should call the Flagship store #101 located on Stratford Road in Winston-Salem and schedule it. They'll steer you into a time block when their HOT sign will be on and you'll get to see the entire process from start-to-finish, including filling and decorating!
And when you're done... you can buy a box of the doughnuts you just watched in production. Better make it two boxes!
The Flagship Krispy Kreme store #101 is located at 259 S Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
