Visitors to Lexington, which is the self-proclaimed Barbecue Capital of the World, may not expect that in this city of more than 18,000 residents, a lone Amish store fills a space in the historic downtown area. But just down the street from the storied old U.S. Post Office and around the corner from the esteemed Davidson County Historical Museum, you’ll find Sweet Briar Country Market which specializes in Amish bulk goods and more.
If a cruise through Lexington's historic downtown is a trip down memory lane, then stepping inside this Amish market is like stepping into the past.
You'll find bulk goods galore, including gluten-free items. The store isn't huge, but there are rows of neatly packaged bulk goods, plus shelves of Amish jar goods like preserves and pickled items (think boiled eggs...).
In fact, the bakery not only has a variety of freshly baked bread on hand, it also makes custom-ordered cakes and other baked goods. Want an Amish birthday cake, complete with decorations? Yep. They'll make if for you.
Sweet Briar Country Market also carries some Amish-made gift items as well as some local and regional items beloved by customers. Daniel Boone Stone Ground Grits are made about an hour away and the locals appreciate not having to drive all the way to the mill to get their grits.
Although Blenheim Ginger Ale is actually made in South Carolina, it's still a product born in the Carolinas and you'll find plenty of it at this Amish store.
Sweet Briar Country Market is right on 2nd Avenue in downtown Lexington, with parking available on the street out front and in lots to the rear and left of the building.
