While summer is usually synonymous with a beach trip, I find it the perfect time to visit the mountains. The swimming holes are still crisp and cool, but just the right temperature for a dip after a long hike. Abundant wildflowers and rhododendron blooms line the trails, greenery is overflowing almost everywhere; sure, you can beach it all summer, but for me, summertime is also made for mountain adventure. Wanting to know what to do this summer? These ten things are a must!
1. Spend a weekend in a charming mountain town.
From visiting the beautiful town of
Bryson City and hopping on board the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, to spending a day in the quaint
Chimney Rock Village; many people head straight to Asheville but the real heart and soul of Appalachia is found in the many small towns throughout the mountains.
2. Stroll across the Lake Lure Flower Bridge
Speaking of small mountain towns, this historic bridge connecting Lake Lure and Chimney Rock almost met its demise, until a group of inventive volunteers worked dilligently to transform it into the Flower Bridge. Filled with different sections flowing with flora and natural plants,
this short stroll is beyond beautiful.
3. Take a hike
This is of course a given, but there's so many wonderful trails and long hikes throughout the mountains. From spending a weekend on the Appalachian Trail to conquering more challenging day hikes, the problem is some people don't know where to begin or what trails to choose (it can get overwhelming). Looking for a short hike?
These 10 are under three miles and perfect for an easy day of beautiful scenes and exercise.
4. DO go chasing waterfalls
Sorry TLC, you had a great metaphorical point, but when literally translated, why would you not chase some waterfalls? Just like with hikes, sometimes the amount of waterfalls can get a bit overwhelming (Transylvania County alone is home to 250). Follow this
waterfall road trip to make the most of chasin' those falls.
5. Dine with a view
From riverside dining in Chimney Rock and Bryson City, to waterfront dining on Lake Lure, or even perched amongst the clouds, summer is perfect for outdoor dining in a gorgeous location. One such restaurant,
Gideon Ridge, situates you amongst mountain peaks in a gorgeous green, European-inspired setting.
6. Swim beside a waterfall
When a state has both amazing waterfalls and natural swimming holes, why not combine the two (in safe conditions).
These 12 are a must-do.
7. Catch the rhododendron blooms

Rhododendron season comes and goes as fast as the first blooms appear and then later cover the trails. From late may to early June, these unique plants add extra colors to various trails and attractions in the Blue Ridge. While Craggy Gardens is a popular option, Grandfather Mountain also offers the
Rhododendron Ramble Festival June 1-11.
8. Take a family outing to Tweetsie Railroad
This beloved North Carolina theme park offers so much more than train rides. From can-can dancers to multiple rides, it's an entire experience away from the world. This year offers special events due to the fact it's their 60th Anniversary!
Read our guide to plan your summer trip to Tweetsie.
9. Try horseback riding
From beginners to seasoned riders,
Wolf Laurel Stables offers different rides and trails all featuring beautiful scenery. Climb up the mountain on horseback and be treated to stunning 360 views at Big Bald Mountain. Perfect for a unique date, day, adventure or even refresher for past riders.
10. Go glamping
Camping is cool but sometimes we also crave a bit of creature comforts. Enter glamping, the outdoor experience that doesn't sacrifice some basic and some fancy necessities. The perfect place to do is is
Sky Ridge Yurts outside of Bryson City. Offering different 'yurt' options, it's great for a unique getaway or even a mild break during a longer, more primitive camping experience.
Enough for your summer bucket list and then some! What else would you add to the list? Which one are you planning to do first?
