North Carolina is home to over 400 vineyards and around 200 wineries so there’s no shortage of a homegrown tasting experience in the Tar Heel State. But have you ever visited a mead winery? (Harry Potter fans will recognize mead from the menu at the Leaky Cauldron in London.) If mead is a new concept to you, it’s wine made from fermenting honey with water and flavorings. It sounds delicious – because it is. And you can visit a meadery in Pittsboro to sip on honey wine (a.k.a. mead) and even stock up on bottles of your own.
Starrlight Mead is located at 130 Lorax Lane in Pittsboro, about 45 minutes west of Raleigh and 45 minutes east of Asheboro.
Settle in to their wonderful tasting room and sample a variety of honey wine flavors from traditional to sweet, berry, pineapple, peach, apple, pomegranate peppercorn, and even cranberry orange.
Sampling a variety of delicious honey wines and enjoying the view from the shady covered porch. And who knows? Maybe your love of wine will grow beyond the traditional grape varieties found at other wineries in North Carolina!
Why not take a little road trip (with a designate driver, of course) and find out?! Starrlight Mead is open seven days a week. The hours are Monday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tours are available on Saturday and Sunday only. Learn more from the Starrlight Mead website.
