The Southport Marina is a central part of the small town but reflects the maritime heritage that dates back to the town's founding as Smithville in 1792.

The downtown Riverwalk introduces you to the laid back, waterside culture of the town while also providing stunning views along the way. There's also the "Marsh Walk," a long boardwalk that begins at Brunswick Ave near the edges of downtown and leads you through a variety of coastal landscapes. You'll be treated to views of the Cape Fear River, Elizabeth River, and miles of water views that define Southport and make it such a coveted destination.

The marsh walk seems to end in the middle of nowhere, but that's part of the fun. The walk itself is a reclusive nature trail sectioned between multiple boat docks. The walk is just 1/18th of a mile but is great for bird watching and seeing Southport from a new, scenic vantage point.
