Not many people realize Quaker roots in North Carolina trace all the way back to 1741, when the first meeting was held in the Cane Creek Valley. That community soon became known as Snow Camp. How that name came about is a bit of a contention among historians, but it stuck. And today, the unincorporated community of Snow Camp is quite a step back in time. With restaurants, a winery, and a preserved historic settlement, Snow Camp is worthy of a visit. Take a look below at some of the amazing sites and historic attractions.
Built in 1907, this is the fourth meeting house at this site. During the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Lindley's Mill was fought in this area and several prominent people and officials were held prisoner inside the original (Quaker) meeting house on this site. It's located in Snow Camp near the intersection of E Greensboro Chapel Hill Road and Stockard Road. In the adjacent small cemetery lay the remains of some of the first Quakers to settle in Snow Camp, as well as 25 unmarked graves of Revolutionary War soldiers.
