Since the early 1800s, Hot Springs has been considered a resort destination for those seeking to experience the water. Before then, Native Americans were the first to discover this 100-plus degree water. Today, this vibrant community in Madison County is considered a go-to for thrill-seekers, hikers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and those seeking a peaceful, romantic escape in the mountains. You'll quickly discover that there are endless things to do in Hot Springs.
Hot Springs is located just 45 minutes from the bustling mountain town of Asheville. If you've flown into Asheville, you can rent a car and take US-25 N/US-70 W. It's a winding drive that will showcase the area's beautiful rolling hills and stunning mountainscape.
The heart of downtown Hot Springs is tiny, yet filled with points of interest. It's easy to walk from one shop or restaurant to another, but if you really want to explore the area, you'll need a car. In the late nineteenth century, there was once a luxury resort known as the Mountain Park Hotel. The hotel was famous for its luxe amenities, including the first golf course built in North Carolina and marble pools in bathhouses set over the warm springs. Unfortunately, this hotel faced great damage in the Great Flood and was then destroyed by fire in 1920. Today, you'll find an assortment of simple and beautiful cabins for rent. Photographed above are the cabins at Maple Lane, which require a two-minimum-night stay and can accommodate up to four guests each. When last we checked, rates were just $95/night.

Lovers Leap Trail offers the best view of Hot Springs. Be sure to wear your sturdy hiking shoes, because this 1.8-mile loop trail packs quite a punch. Most hikers consider it to be moderately challenging, so be sure to pack some extra water, too. Once you reach the top, you'll definitely want to stop to snap a few photos. Just look at the gorgeous view of the French Broad!
