The Tar Heel State is not without a plethora of ghost stories, unexplained haunts, and hair-raising tales. Back in the 1940s and 50s, a tale began to fester in the town of Williamston, NC about a local mill owner who decided to do away with his nagging wife.
As the legend goes, the frustrated husband dragged his wife to this Williamston bridge (located on Yarrell Creek Road) with poor intentions.
Generations of youth have since spread the tale of how the mill owner tied a mill block to his wife and threw here over the bridge into Yarrell Creek below. As she was still alive, she screamed all the while.
Today, the bridge on Yarrell Creek Road is one of the most haunted in the entire state.
It seems the spirit of the mill owner's wife is stuck for eternity in between the here and now and another place.
Visitors to the bridge report hearing the blood curdling screams of the ghost of the mill owner's wife — especially around midnight.
And for some reason, Halloween only exacerbates the occurrences of her screaming. Would you dare go sit under this bridge at midnight to check it out? That's a big no, if you ask me.To learn more of the legend of the screaming bridge, check out the youtube video below from user WNCT-TV 9 On Your Side: VIDEO
