Sometimes life calls for a scenic waterfront drive in North Carolina. And one of the strongest motivators is the relentless summer heat. This scenic 58-mile route takes you to some New River destinations where you’re sure to get wet if you like. Each offering has unique ways to celebrate the New River, which ironically is one of the oldest rivers in the world. And speaking of old, a couple of historic stops have been included on one of the prettiest joyrides in North Carolina.
1. Wahoo’s Adventures New River Outpost: Todd

Drag along a sack of granola and start your day at this adventure-driven depot on the South Fork of the New River. The choice is yours between tubing, canoeing, kayaking, and standup paddle boarding. Learn more on the Wahoo’s Adventures New River Outpost website.

It's time for a real breakfast served family-style complete with a lazy Susan! Yes, large platters of your favorite early morning foods are shared on the table and refilled upon request.

The hours change with the seasons and summer normally brings breakfast Friday-Sunday beginning at 8:00 a.m. - 11 a.m. when it switches over to lunch.
This refreshing, ADA-accessible trail follows and crosses the picturesque South Fork of the New River through open meadows, magical forests, and to a historic ruin.
4. Ashe County Cheese: West Jefferson

Did you know this is North Carolina's oldest and largest cheese manufacturer? Part of the fun is watching the delicious cheese being made in the factory's viewing room. Take home some of your favorites from the retail store.

6. New River State Park: Laurel Springs, Jefferson

This incredible park showcases this wild and scenic river, which is why we came. All accesses allow for kayaks and inner tubes for a peaceful paddle or float.

Twenty-six miles of the South Fork New River was declared a National Scenic River in 1976 by the federal government. And in 1977, North Carolina established the New River State Park to help protect the river’s natural resources and retain its beauty. 7. River House Inn & Restaurant: Grassy Creek
