Fall in North Carolina means several things – pumpkin, pumpkin beers, pumpkin patches, Halloween, curious adventures and of course, getting lost in a corn maze. Corn mazes are equal parts whimsy and fun. While you venture through the tall stalks, you might feel trepidation and an uneasiness of getting lost, but that’s only balanced out by thrill and adventure once you meet your endpoint. And if you’re going to go through a corn maze, it might as well be the best corn maze in North Carolina, right? One of the largest corn mazes in the southeast is actually in North Carolina, and this fall you’ll want to try it.
The 'Amazing Maize Maze' is located in Huntersville and features a giant 7-acre corn maze with two miles of connecting paths. That's right, it's a hefty dose of fall fun in North Carolina in just one excursion.
Because of the maze's size, first you have to graduate from maze school before you can even start your voyage. The trained staff educates you on a brief history of the farm, maze pointers, tips and tricks for navigating through the 'seven acre puzzle.' That's how you know this is the real deal. Those with a poor sense of direction may want to bring friends.
To really reel in the fact you're about to venture through on the of largest mazes in the southeast...each group is given a flag prior to their journey. The flag is crucial; if you get lost or turned around in the maze, this is your only available signal for help. There are also special, small flags, for little ones. Clutch this flag for dear life even if you're feeling hyper confident that you can get through the maze on your own (they all say that).
Welcome to the maze! While here, you want to search for the mailbox. Each of the 12 mailboxes contain a piece you tape to the map provided. Slowly, the map starts to show you the way...but it's not always easy...not even close. This is not a Google Maps situation, folks, we're going old school at this corn maze in North Carolina.
Staff are positioned throughout the maze to help those who get lost or turned around. If you need to get out for a break or bathroom, it's actually quite easy to get out of the maze (with the help of staff) and transported right back in. Most of the senior staff have the maze completely memorized with the ability to find their way out in 10 minutes. You'll realize just how impressive that is when you've completed the course.
If you're like me and would definitely need a libation after completing one of the largest mazes in the southeast, vendors are often onsite during the weekends. You'll find a wide variety of beverages including local brews from Lenny Boy and wine from Shelton Vineyards. Upcoming events at Rural Hill Farm include the Pumpkin Fest. Why not pair your corn maze outing with another piece of fall fun?
The amazing maize runs through November with first timers and longterm maze goers equally experiencing the fun. All ages are invited to participate in the maze. From group outings, team building events and even a fun way to spend a fall day. It's hard to pass up on the amazing maize maze. And don't get any big ideas, they change the maze every year so your memorized mental map of last years is no help.
What a fun and unique way to spend an October day! I’d love to do this, though it’s hard to say whether I could find my way out of one of the best corn mazes in North Carolina. Have you done the Rural Hill maze before?
