North Carolina is teeming with abandoned places to discover along trails through the woods. From the ruins of an old plane crash on the side of a mountain to a redundant church deep in the woods in the Cataloochee Valley, and even a ghost town , you may be surprised at the historical sites that you can hike to in the Tar Heel State.
The Robinson Rock House Trail is found just outside of downtown Charlotte at Reedy Creek Park.
Here, you'll hike 0.9-miles under the canopy of a thick forest before arriving at the ruins of the old Robinson Rock House.
As far as hikes go, this trail is relatively easy-going. A modest elevation gain of 121 feet means you'll do some, albeit minimal, climbing along the route.
It's a heavily-trafficked path but, by all means, feel free to bring your four-legged family members along — as long as they are leashed.
The ruins of the Robinson Rock House are astonishingly intact, considering it was built in the late 1700s.
Informational kiosks erected on the property by the City of Charlotte tell the story of the Robinson family, whose patriarch, Robert Robinson, built the dwelling sometime between 1775 and 1800.
At the time, building a house entirely of stone was considered a sign of considerable wealth.
Otherwise, homes of the Colonial period were constructed out of wood.
You'll be impressed by the stones that make up the walls that remain of the Robinson Rock House.
They were hand cut just for this dwelling from a local quarry. The rear left corner still stands at nearly its original two-story height.
Feel free to wander throughout the ruins.
For the time being, there are no fences or barriers preventing full exploration. But to keep this spot safe for future generations to visit in the same manner, please do not climb on the rock walls.
Charlotte's Reedy Creek Park has a ton of other things to enjoy as well. You can learn about them all with a visit to the official park website .
