Profile Trail to Calloway Peak is one of the prettiest and toughest hikes in North Carolina.
The trail is an out and back hike located near Banner Elk in Grandfather Mountain State Park, and is about seven and a half miles long.
The trail starts out as an easy, sloping path that will take you through seasonal wildflower patches and across the Watuaga River.
However, about three miles into the hike, you’ll notice that the path starts to gain elevation quickly. You should be prepared for rocky terrain and tricky footwork.
At the top of Profile Trail, you’ll make a quick detour onto Grandfather Trail, which will take you to your final destination: Calloway Peak.
At a stunning 5,946-feet high, this beautiful mountain offers views that will absolutely drop your jaw. It’s the perfect place to stop for a rest.
Depending on when you visit, you can expect to see rolling waves of clouds or a crisp, clear view out onto the surrounding countryside.
Though this trail is tough, the reward at the end is completely worth it.
