Normally we think of BBQ joints as simple exteriors with wood stacked high. That smoky smell bellowing through the air creating a river of hunger. Normally, we don’t think of BBQ joints with planes flying overhead and watching them land with hands sticky from BBQ sauce. A true hidden wonder of our state, diners get a meal and a show at Pik N Pig.
Flying in for lunch? That's something you can do here at Pik N Pig located in Carthage. A family business for four decades that's operated beside the small Gilliam-Mcconnell Airport, diners are treated to more than fall-off-the-bone ribs or thickly cut pork; but an entire experience. The small airport is home to a taxiway with hangars and utility sheds. The passengers? Typically golfers heading in or out to nearby Southern Pines and Pinehurst.
Before you reach the BBQ, you might encounter a peculiar looking plane with gnarly teeth and an animated grin. That's just Junkyard Yard Dog, a World War II replica P-40 Warhawk fighter plane. While Junkyard Dog stays immobile, don't be surprised to have planes whizzing above your head in search of a smooth landing or blue skies. The airport stays quite busy, and many frequent Pik N Pig for some of the best under-the-radar BBQ.
The BBQ is smoked overnight above a natural wood fire consisting of hickory and charcoal. That results in a tender, tasty meat that comes served with a side of Pik N' Pig sauce. If you're a rib person, get there early on Saturday nights; slow smoked for hours over hickory coals, they sell out as fast as you'll eat 'em. Even if BBQ isn't your thing, there's the famous smoked chicken, hand rubbed in spices and slow cooked. Of course, you can't forget sides like cornbread, baked beans, fried pickles or classic french fries.
While you might be tempted to stuff yourself full with BBQ (trust me, been there) save room for the banana pudding. Served in a jar just like Grandma would, it's piled high with decadent cream filling, generous chunks of nilla wafers and a whip topping.
While BBQ is, of course, the main event, diners can also enjoy the complimentary airshow on the breezy outdoor patio.
You really can't beat the uniqueness of a place like Pik N' Pig. While several restaurants offer a stunning view or memorable experience, it boils down to if the food is good or not. Here, it's not just an airshow but an amazing BBQ joint hiding beside a small airport. It's a little more than your average, with flavor and experience to back it up. While BBQ is synonymous with North Carolina culture and traditions, Pik N Pig flies out of the box with something different.
