It would be difficult to image a world without a few sweet indulgences from time to time. (Thankfully, most people don’t have to!) At Old Europe Pastries in downtown Asheville, your taste buds can time travel all the way back to the Old World in Europe to savor flavors from the past including Hungarian pastries as well as sweet delights from France, Germany, Austria, and more with recipes and confections that date back to at least the 1800s.
Located on Broadway in downtown Asheville, Old Europe Pastries is a local favorite for sweet confections, breakfast croissants, and coffee.
With seating outside, it's a lovely spot to sit and enjoy the activity from the street and surrounding buildings while you sip and sample flavors from another era.
The small bakery also includes inside seating in a space that feels like a small cafe in Europe.
Seen here, Dobos Torte is an 1800s creation from Budapest. You won't find it presented or tasting more authentic anywhere else in North Carolina.

Another Hungarian delight and offered in different varieties for the holidays, the Beigli is a Hungarian poppyseed roll. You may only find this version during the Christmas season, but other varieties pop up during the year at Old Europe Pastries.
Be sure to sample an original creation of the bakery. It's called the Cruffin (croissant + muffin) and you're sure to be hooked — even before the first bite.
If it's European sweets you seek, then you're in the right place!
From German Chocolate Cake to French Opera Cake (seen here) and more, there are so many options to choose from, you'll just have to return another day to try more (or get a variety box to go).
Old Europe Pastries is open seven days a week late into the night. The hours are Sunday-Thursday from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. and Friday/Saturday from 7 a.m. to midnight. Learn more from the official website here and follow the Facebook page here.
