North Carolina has so many wonderful small towns that are worthy of a day trip. One of our favorites is the charming town of Brevard, a scenic little town in Transylvania County with a population that hovers around 8,000. As the town is the gateway to the Pisgah National Forest, it’s a popular pit stop for nature lovers on their way to the many scenic spots and waterfalls in the area, but it’s much more than that. This beautiful little town is peppered with some truly special eateries, and one of them just so happens to have some of the best shepherd’s pie in North Carolina. It’s not a dish that’s often associated with North Carolina, but after you pay this restaurant a visit, it will be.
Welcome to Dugan’s, an Irish Pub that’s been serving the Brevard community since 2003.
With 20 beers on tap and a tasty menu full of wonderful pub grub, it’s a great spot to meet up with friends and watch the big game, or enjoy a casual family dinner together.
This classic comfort food checks all the right boxes. Ground beef, pork, and vegetables are sautéed together along with the perfect blend of spices and then covered in a blanket of mashed potatoes and sealed with cheddar cheese. Served with bread, this is one of those meals that just feels nostalgic. No wonder it's the best shepherd's pie in North Carolina.
A meal like this deserves to end on a sweet note, so be sure to peep the dessert menu.
Homemade cakes, cobblers, and pies are always in rotation, and that sugar rush is just what you need so you don't fall asleep from all that comfort food!
Be sure to visit Dugan’s website for a full menu and hours of operation. And visit Pisgah National Forest, one of four national forests in North Carolina with plenty of trails to explore. Grab those boots and hit the trails!
