In a state with as much history as North Carolina it’s not hard to comprehend that there are countless ghost stories and lots folklore. Some stories go as far back as the first failed attempts at colonization to the days of notorious pirates and shipwrecks — and this particular story dates back centuries.
According to local legend, random balls of bright light mysteriously appear out of thin air in the middle of the Pisgah National Forest at Brown Mountain. Witnesses say they swirl around, zip and sometimes even hover over the mountain before disappearing completely.
The elusive lights have baffled locals, scientists and skeptics since the late 1700s when a local Native American tribe first saw them. Though the first documented report of the lights appeared in the Charlotte Observer in 1913.

Theories on what causes the unusual occurrence range from paranormal entities and aliens to methane gas and other natural causes. Scientists, geologists, even amateur ghost hunters have investigated the phenomenon in hopes of finding an explanation that would completely unravel the mystery — to no avail.
