While Cape Hatteras is a popular summer destination, miles of untouched seashore and places to explore make it the perfect, quaint getaway. The National Seashore is home to various wildlife and also allows those with four-wheel drive to cruise along the beach. Taking a drive to some uncharted spots allow for quiet solitude away from the world.

Lake Glenville Lot

Lake Glenville is a gorgeous hidden reservoir. Located at 3,500 ft. above sea level, the beautiful lake is home to three waterfalls, crystal clear water, and lots of serene spots. You'll find it eight miles from Cashiers.

This small chain of mountains referred to as a masiff is home to grassy balds - AKA, wide open fields on top of a mountain. The views and scenery are stunning. It's traversed by more experienced hikers and also backpackers since the Appalachian Trail crosses several other trails. For a remote experience it's a great mountain destination.

Due to its remote location - Ocracoke Island is only accessible by ferry, it's also been given the title of Most Remote Location in North Carolina, so you know here, you'll leave the world behind. The small island is home to gorgeous beaches, small shops and restaurants, the historic Ocracoke Lighthouse, as well as tideland and marsh forests.

Home to 160,000 acres, Croatan National Forest is considered to be the only true coastal National Forest in the eastern US. You'll find beautiful pine forests, raised swamps, an assortment of various wildlife including black bears, birds, and even a Venus Fly Trap. The size of the forest takes you away from humanity and it's almost too easy to not encounter another human on your hike or exploration.

If you're an experienced hiker not afraid to scale some ladders on your way to the top - the Grandfather Trail is perfect for you. It takes you to the top of the popular Grandfather Mountain, but you're going to be putting in a little effort and bravery along the way. Due to the difficulty of the trail, it stays relatively empty, but is a must have experience for the avid adventurer.

Mingo Falls is easily one of the most jaw dropping waterfalls you'll find in the Great Smoky Mountains. The remote location and 0.4 mile hike sometimes keeps the crowds away from this amazing 120 ft. waterfall.
