Have a craving for a hot dog and a bit of history? There’s a hot dog restaurant in North Carolina that’s a strong contender for the oldest continuously operated eating establishment in the state. At the very least, it’s been serving hot dogs longer than any other eatery in the Tar Heel State – and once you see them (the hot dogs!), you’ll understand why this place is an institution.
Zack's Hot Dogs opened 91 years ago in 1928, and has been tantalizing taste buds ever since. The original location was on the corner of Worth and Front Street in Burlington, where it remained until late 1977.
According to many, that secret is in the chili, which comes from a top secret family recipe belonging to the restaurant's founder, Zack Touloupas (Mr. Zack), who brought it with him all the way from the mountains of Northern Greece, where he was born.
Today, Zack's is a home away from home for many Burlington residents and folks who grew up with this neighborhood hangout. After moving in 1977 to a newer and bigger location, Zack's had plenty of room for everyone in the new spot, which also has a lot of windows perfect for letting in a lot of natural light.
When you head to Zack's, you may want to bring an extra shirt. This meal can get a bit messy! Seen here, the dog combo that includes a long square of cheese and a perfectly cooked slice of bacon found underneath a heaping portion of chili served on top is evidence of the deliciously messy challenge ahead.
At Zack's there are a number of items on the menu, but the hot dogs are hands-down the all-time fave. Order them up with a variety of toppings and don't forget to have a side of fries!
Are you among the many generations of locals who grew up with Zack’s Hot Dogs? We’d love to hear from you!
