North Carolina's Tunnel Of Trees Is Positively Magical And You Need To Visit

Having grown up not far from the road, I remember the first time I drove down it. I was young and riding passenger, and it was an incredible, breathtaking experience. When it came to getting a new car, needing to drive through scenery, or even just joy ride, I always took the scenic route and hopped on Conrad Rd.

For the hundreds of times (and miles) spent driving down through the tunnel of trees, somehow the beauty never gets old. It's gorgeous year-round but especially in summer and of course the fall.

Depending on which way you're driving down the road, the scenery starts off with a vast expanse of fields, miles of open space and a few houses. Once you pass Grapevine Rd. on your left, that's when you begin to enter the tunnel, the road curves and dips, as overhead you're delighted in leaves directly above the car and trees dotting the road and creating a literal tunnel. On both sides you'll find farmland, the right with horses roaming the pasture, and the left a gorgeous white house on top of a hill. The tunnel begins to mellow out a bit. Once you reach the end of Conrad Rd. you can go right or left. Left will take you to Lewisville and 421, while going right gives you more country cruising and a few miles down you'll find Medaloni Cellars and even farther you'll pass a bridge over the Yadkin. One notable stop near Conrad Rd. is Ted's Kickin' Chicken (the chicken joint literally in the middle of a field).

Many people aren't aware the Yadkin River actually runs parallel to Conrad RD. While not visible from the road, private drives and a few access points in the woods allow you to get to the Yadkin. You can also access Yadkinville from the road, which makes it a gorgeous, daily commute for many.

You'll want to take a drive and visit as soon as you can, especially before the leaves change! In the last few years, a lot of the land off the road has gone for sale, and developments have begun although usually a single, residential house. Let's hope throughout the years Conrad Rd. always retains its wild beauty. It's by far my favorite road, and after one drive, it will be yours too!
