Most women won’t admit it, but they find hardware stores fascinating, and seemingly… so do men! If there’s one can’t-miss hardware store in the entire state of North Carolina, it’s this one, found on Craven Street in New Bern. From its long history of serving the community to its present of, well, still serving the community, it’s been a staple for more than one hundred years.
Mitchell Hardware first opened its doors in 1898, initially serving the community as a livery, specializing in selling horses, mules, wagons, and harnesses. But it soon became everyone's go-to place for hard-to-find items.
It's still a place where the community gathers just to catch up on life, and to, you know... buy flowers and tools and just about anything else under the sun.
The store stayed in the Mitchell family until 1987, when it was sold to a pair of longtime residents of Craven County. Today, it's owned and operated by the Smiths (two sisters) instead of the Mitchells, but you can still feel the welcome arms of yesteryear each time you walk through the doors.
On your own visit to Mitchells, you'll find a whole lot of this and that. Whether you need power tools, a new rake, one tiny odd screw for that screen door, or a variety of household items, you're sure to find it at Mitchell.
Mitchell Hardware is located at 215 Craven St., New Bern, NC 28560. It’s open six days a week: Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (The store is closed on Sunday.) For more information, see the official website of Mitchell Hardware, or their very active Facebook page.
