North Carolina has the seventh longest coastline in the U.S. With 301 miles to explore, you can find hidden beaches and tiny little beach towns all along the North Carolina coast. Without a doubt, you’ve already begun the massive adventure of exploring all there is to find along the sandy shores of the Tar Heel State.
But the tiny town of Manteo (population 1,400) proves you don't have to be on the ocean to be a beach town.
Located on Roanoke Island, Manteo is only a hop, skip and a jump away from Nags Head and Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
Although not on the ocean, Manteo's location leaves nothing to be desired in the way of waterfront views and attractions. There is always something to do in Manteo. Let's take a look at a few of the top things to do and places to see.
Elizabethan Gardens
Nature lovers and history buffs will enjoy this 10-acre delight featuring a wide array of blooming plants and wildlife. No matter the season, the gardens are a beautiful way to spend the morning or afternoon.

Roanoke Marshes Light
The NC Maritime Museum oversees the historical displays found within this newly commissioned (2004) lighthouse on the Roanoke Sound. Built as a replica of a lighthouse that was lost in 1955 while attempting to move it, this new light is a navigational tool for seafarers in the sound.
The Lost Colony
Now in its 81st year, this tourist's favorite is a live production performed at an amphitheater in a Manteo park. The story follows actual events as they unfolded hundreds of years ago on the very spot where the performance takes place. Shows are held throughout the summer.

North Carolina Aquarium
Explore sea life at this multi-faceted attraction. The aquarium features a variety of salt water species, including the largest school of sharks in the state. A variety of events and outdoor excursions take place throughout the year, making it even more fun for a family excursion.
