When searching for the most remote of places in North Carolina in which an entire family can steal away for a vacation like no other, you would be hard pressed to top this remote, ramshackle outpost camp located on a deserted island included in a National Park along the coast. As part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore’s 56 miles of pristine coastline, the cabins and the outpost camp found on this remote island are rustic and guarantee an adventure like no other.

As with any outpost adventure, getting to this little spot in paradise isn't an easy feat.

Fortunately a local vendor on the mainland has a 1-2 car ferry service to carry you, your vehicle, supplies and family the short distance across the Sound.
The journey begins at Morris Marina in Atlantic, North Carolina.

You'll need to bring everything with you that you'll need for this vacation. The outpost includes only a roof over your head, bathrooms, a shower, and mattresses.
The nice thing is that once you reach the island destination dock and unload your car, it's only a few hundred yards to the outpost camp and the Park Ranger Office to check in.

That National Park Service has gone to great lengths to make this outpost camp as rustic as possible; however, the office does have an ice machine for when you need to replenish your supplies.
Each of the 10 cabins here are duplex structures that are mere steps from the ocean.

Inside, a scant 500 square feet is equipped with six single bunk beds, a kitchen, and bathroom. Some folks, who have a need for more room, simply rent both sides of the duplex. There are no accessories such as towels, sheets, cooking utensils. You'll need to bring everything (including toilet paper) with you.
For those who enjoy roughing it in the wild, this is the place to go!

You'll be pleasantly surprised to hear that the camp has a generator, so each cabin does have electricity. (A few even have window air conditioners!) But will you really need an air conditioner? Just look how close the cabins are to the sweet, salty, ocean breeze!

Cabin rental rates vary by season. Peak season rates run from $112-$145 night; and in non-peak season (which is June 1 through August 31) nightly cabin rates run from $84-$108/night! Not bad for having an entire rustic outpost almost all to yourself!
