Mark your calendar for June’s big celestial event: the last Super Moon of the year, a Strawberry Moon making an appearance on June 24, 2021 (a Thursday). Few things are quite as mesmerizing as simply gazing at the moon. After all, it’s a space odyssey we’d probably all like to explore on foot and in person at some point in our lives.
And June's full Strawberry Moon is just the one to remind us of the wonders of our natural satellite measuring only about one-quarter of the diameter of Earth, itself.
The term can be traced back to the 1930s when the Maine Farmer's Almanac first published it. It supposedly was hatched by the Algonquin tribes who associated June's last full moon with the short harvest season of the strawberry fruit.
No matter where you are in North Carolina, you'll have a front row seat for this year's Strawberry Moon, which just so happens to be the last Super Moon of the year. Hopefully the weather cooperates so you don't end up viewing it through cloud cover.
From the mountains to the sea, there are scores of perches from which to view the Super Moon. Your own backyard, for instance. Will you be marking your calendar for this celestial event? Weigh in with a comment!
