The history of modern ice cream dates back to the 1600s. It became a popular treat in the United States in the early 1800s, when President Thomas Jefferson’s love for the sweet dessert made the rest of the country want to follow suit. As delicious as the ice cream we grew up with is, in recent years, modern ice cream has gotten a bit of a makeover and the result is a delightful new rendition of traditional ice cream. Ice Scraperz in Greensboro makes some of the best in the state – and you need to give it a try.
Rolled ice cream, as it's called, still tastes the same but the presentation is so much different. And so is the way it's made:
It's also referred to as stir-fried ice cream because the cream, milk, and sugars are stirred together in a pitcher or bowl and then poured onto a freezing cold metal sheet at a temperature of -20 degrees where it is ice-fried by the chilly metal surface.
Other ingredients are added and the mixture is rolled out flat before being cut into wide strips and then literally rolled up into a perfectly scrumptious roll. (Several of them, actually.)
