Travel back in time by way of horseback on an adventure that leads to an old garnet and gem mine in North Carolina – and when you get there, dig for garnets (or other precious gems) of your own. Whatever you find, you get to keep! The Little Pine Garnet Mine became popular in the early 1900s for its treasure trove of high quality garnets. It’s said that even Tiffany, the world-renowned jeweler, once had a contract with the owners of the mine for precious garnets to sell in their New York Store.
But prior to the Little Pine Garnet Mine's popularity as a source for garnets, it was mined for other gems, too — starting all the way back in the early 1800s.
On this one-of-a-kind horseback tour trail ride offered by Sandy Bottom Trail Rides, you'll travel just like the prospectors of yesteryear did and slowly make your way to the mine to dig for stones.
Sandy Bottom offers two, three, and four-hour rides that all include a visit to the Little Pine Garnet Mine.
You'll have some tools of your own that are perfect for finding hidden treasure. The mine is famous for a near-perfect garnet measuring six inches in diameter that was found here once upon a time.
After ample time to explore and do a bit of digging at this secluded mine, you'll hit the trail once again.
Don't be surprised if your horse needs to refuel when it sees the tasty greens available along the trail! It's an ideal opportunity to stretch your legs, admire the views, and take some photos!
The gem mine trail rides at Sandy Bottom Trail Rides always receive glowing reviews and are family-friendly.
