History is very much alive in western North Carolina and there’s no better way to explore it than with a visit to the historic Shelton House Museum. Built in 1878 near Waynesville, the Shelton House was originally a single-family dwelling built by the Shelton family and then either sold or passed down through the generations to other Sheltons or relatives of the Sheltons.
Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Shelton House was at first just what you see from the front of the structure: a small and charming little farm house.
A few years after the construction, an additional two-story wing was added to the rear. The first floor of that addition would include a kitchen and dining room, as well as a sleeping porch on the home's east side.
The upstairs addition added another four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a linen closet.
Today, the main house of the estate offers a glimpse into the everyday lives of the Sheltons as they were in the late 1800s. Furniture, clothing, and personal items are on display and worth checking out.
In 1918, a second structure was added to property right behind the main house. At the time, the second floor of that structure (now called the Carriage House) was an apartment for the family's housekeeper. The first floor was used for utilities, such as a coal bin and general storage.
Today, it's now home to the Shelton Carriage House Gift Shop.
Whether you're perusing the vintage collection kept in the main house in the Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts...
Or you're over in the Shelton House Gift Shop, you'll love the compilation of hand-crafted items on view (and some for purchase) here at the Shelton House. It's wonderful to see such a massive collection from artisans both past and present.
