North Carolina quite literally has hundreds and hundreds of waterfalls that make delightful destination hikes. One of them, the very tall Picklesimer Rock House Falls, is found on a 1.2-mile out-and-back trail with a very small elevation gain – which means you won’t have to do a lot of strenuous work to get there.
Picklesimer Rock House Falls is found at the halfway point on the trail, at just over a half-mile on the path. At its rear, the waterfall also has a very large cave, a rock house, if you will.
You'll find you love exploring the cave at least as much as you enjoy hearing the gentle sounds of the water flowing over this more than 40 foot waterfall.
The trail begins not far from the parking area (seen here at far left). You'll begin on an old logging road which soon turns into a more narrow trail.
Follow it through a variety of terrain, including underneath a canopy of trees high overhead.
And through a small field. In the heat of the summer, you'll want to be sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Even under a canopy of trees, hydration is important in the heat.
Once you arrive at the rock house and Picklesimer Rock House Falls, you can walk entirely behind the falls (without getting wet) and hunker down within the cave to enjoy some peace and quite while you listen to the sound of the falls.
Picklesimer Rock House Falls is one of the lesser-known, lighter-trafficked waterfall trails in North Carolina. But it is still very much worth the effort to see the falls and the cave.
The trailhead is located near Highlands, North Carolina.
