Reconnect with nature in the best of possible ways with some quiet reflection time at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve just outside of Raleigh. Whether visiting the Capital City, or a nearby resident, an hour or two spent within this Hemlock forest is sure to calm even the largest of worries deep within. Here’s more on this hidden locale and why you should visit:
Found in Cary, just outside of Raleigh, Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is a little known gem in the Tar Heel State.
At only 140 acres in size, this small yet beautiful preserve was created solely to preserve an old stand of Eastern Hemlock trees on this property.
As the name implies, Eastern Hemlocks are native to the Eastern part of the country, but they're rare in most places in North Carolina
The map where this species of hemlock trees can be found in the Eastern U.S. shows the mountains of North Carolina — and one tiny little green dot in the eastern third of the state. That little green dot is Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve. In 1924, an invasive bug was introduced into the eco system in the U.S. and it destroyed much of the population of this tree species and the threat is still very real.
At Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve you can wander in wonder on a number of trails.
For a small nature preserve, it boasts four trails and a little more than three miles of hiking or walking.
The Swift Creek Loop trail is 0.8-miles long and follows along the bustling Swift Creek.
Other trails dole out some elevation changes, but they're minor.
The nature preserve is ideal for kids, but keep in mind there are some stairs to conquer here.
Visit in every season to experience the different perspectives of this wonderful, hidden park.
All of the trails begin at the Stevens Nature Center , which opens at 9 a.m. and closes at sunset.
