Do you believe in ghosts? Many people report strange happenings in some of North Carolina’s cemeteries. Some of these final resting places are said to be home to a ghost or two, but there’s a cemetery in Asheville that’s said to be haunted by an entire battalion of Confederate soldiers.
Riverside Cemetery was established in 1885, and contains the graves of more than 13,000 people. It's a peaceful quiet place...most of the time.
People come from all over to visit the graves of famous authors O. Henry and Thomas Wolfe, but all of the grave sites here have a story, and some are unsettling.
Some of the folks buried here were brutally murdered; others were small children when they died of illness or accidents. It's said that several ghosts haunt this cemetery, including two small children whose laughter can be heard on misty mornings, and an old man who wanders amongst the gravestones, even in the middle of the day.
The oldest known grave here is from December of 1885. Many of the graves here are so old that the inscriptions are barely visible, and it's known that some people were buried here in unmarked graves.
Perhaps the most unsettling tale to come out of this cemetery involves hundreds of men who aren't even buried here. Many visitors over the years have reported hearing gunfire, and seeing the ghosts of Confederate soldiers marching through the cemetery. It's thought that Riverside Cemetery is located along the trail to the 1865 Battle of Asheville, which is located about a mile away.
Visit the cemetery in the evening, and you may find more than just a peaceful, quite place for contemplation and remembrance. Riverside Cemetery is located at 53 Birch St., Asheville, NC 28801.
