Winter activities in North Carolina are abundant, especially in the western mountains. Here you can choose to spend the day skiing, snowboarding, tubing and even ziplining through and/or over the snow. But have you ever tried snowshoeing? For some, it’s a routine activity when the snow falls in the Tar Heel State, but others (me included!) have never even tried it. Read on to discover a showshoe tour you won’t want to miss.
If snowshoeing is a sport you've never given much thought to, then maybe it's time you did. Sugar Mountain Ski Resort has a wilderness adventure tour by way of snowshoes that may pique your interest enough to give it a go.
Sugar Mountain Resort is located in Avery County in the village of Sugar Mountain, next to the quaint mountain town of Banner Elk. It's insanely popular during the winter, when it can seem like half the state shows up to hit the slopes on skis, boards and tubes. But you don't need to be an expert at dodging (or jumping) moguls to find adventure at Sugar Mountain. The vistas alone are worthy of a day trip to just sit and stare at the view.
But, if you're up for a little more activity, then you should head over to the Ski and Snowboarding School where you can sign up for a snowshoe tour. The cost of the tour includes the snowshoes rental, so all you really need is some curiosity and a little stamina.
If it's your first time then don't worry; the tours last only one hour — and you'll definitely get your money's worth in sightseeing returns. The views along the trail are gawk-worthy from Sugar Mountain's 4,452-foot summit.
Snowshoeing offers tremendous opportunities to see the trails on Sugar all covered in fresh white powder. The scenery is so peaceful and quiet. And who knows? Maybe you'll love snowshoeing so much you'll ask Santa for a pair next Christmas.
Sugar Mountain Resort is located at 1009 Sugar Mountain Dr., Sugar Mountain, NC 28604.
Snowshoe tours are $25. Each tour lasts one hour and the cost includes your snowshoes rental. Tours are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Adult tours are for ages 12 and over; kids tours are for ages 8-11. Find out more on their
official website .
