The hidden wonders in North Carolina never cease to amaze. From the seven natural wonders we published in this previous article, to this (eighth?) wonder found only in this one spot along the North Carolina coast, it’s always a delightful surprise to discover something new about your home state.

In this case, the eighth wonder of North Carolina is a naturally occuring coquina outcropping found near Fort Fisher on Kure Beach.

Visible only at low tide, this unique group of rocks is an indigenous creation formed by the bits and pieces of shells broken apart and sorted by the waves, creating a crushed (and hardened when dry) substance that, in some parts of America, has been used for construction.

It's the only location of naturally occurring coastline Coquina Rock in all of North Carolina and it's rather impressive. There are also two such places in Florida, a state where Coquina has been used as building material for as long 400 years.

Want to see it in person? You'll want to make a note of where to find the hidden trail near Fort Fisher (see below). Also, the Coquina outcropping is a perfect spot for finding shells that get trapped among the rocks, so bring a beach pail.

You'll find the hidden trail just north of the Rocky Seawall parking lot at Fort Fisher. Follow the path along the rock wall and keep going. When you get to the gazebo, you're almost there, but keep going.

Fort Fisher is located at 1610 South Fort Fisher Blvd., Kure Beach, NC 28449. The Rock Wall parking area is located just past the fort, and next to the Fort Fisher Monument located on Battle Acre Road. The coquina outcropping on Kure is only visible at low tide.
