Everyone who loves North Carolina will wholeheartedly agree: the Tar Heel State has it all. But none of us likely expected the “all” to include a small town with a wonderful little park that includes a free zoo, too! Only in North Carolina, right?
Welcome to the tiny town of Windsor, located in the Inner Banks of North Carolina.
There are many reasons to visit this historic community that is known for its roots as an original home of the Tuscarora — an Iroquois Native American tribe established in the area long before the arrival of Europeans. Aside from the rich history involving the Tuscarora, Windsor is also home to the popular town-owned and operated
treehouse village where you can rent a rustic treehouse along the scenic Cashie River.
But these are, by far, not the only reasons to gas up the car and head to Windsor.
The town also has a free park and mini-zoo where even the grown ups on this day trip will feel like kids again!
The playground is suitable for kids of all ages.
It's located at 103 N York Street and only a short walk from the Cashie River.
Pack a lunch and bring the kiddos for some quality play time on the playground equipment.
And be sure to carve out enough time to explore the zoo.
From waterfowl to other feathered creatures and more...
The friendly residents here are adorable (like this ostrich with super long eyelashes)!
Ranging from alpacas to water buffaloes, exotic roosters, a zebra, and more, this free zoo is a must-experience!
The longhorn sheep are a sure bet for hamming it up for great photos. Many people will go their entire life without seeing a longhorn sheep in person.
So be sure your camera or phone has a full battery charge. You'll find lots of moments here you'll want to savor for a lifetime.
With plenty of green space for running about and picnic tables with room to enjoy a casual picnic, it will be very easy (not to mention affordable) to spend the better part of the day exploring all this free park and zoo has to offer.
As if a free zoo isn't enough of an enticement, the park is next door to the Cashie Wetlands Walk.
The boardwalk trail leads visitors through a true wetlands habitat with interpretive signage throughout. Explore the swamp underneath a thick canopy of shade all the way to the Cashie River.
At Livermon Park and Mini-Zoo, you won't empty your wallet shelling out dough for entrance fees. It's all absolutely free!
The city even offers free use of canoes and life vests so you can explore the Cashie River.
You'll find it all in the eastern North Carolina town of Windsor, found in the Inner Banks.
As a mere point of reference, Windsor and the Livermon Park & Mini-Zoo are located 60 miles east of Rocky Mount and 83 miles west of Manteo. For more information, visit the Windsor/Bertie Chamber website page for Livermon Park & Mini-Zoo . Current hours are listed as: Summer hours – Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday/Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Winter hours – Monday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
