Is there really any better way to enjoy a woodsy waterfall adventure in autumn than by way of horseback? The answer, in our humble opinion, is: nope! Even after you’ve already taken a scenic fall foliage road trip and enjoyed a picturesque fall hike in the mountains, the icing on the autumn cake just may be this horseback waterfall tour – under and through a canopy of blazing colors.
This fun adventure is offered by Smokemont Riding Stables in Cherokee, where you'll mount your friendly hoofed partner for the tour and set off into the wilderness.
Another friendly face, your awesome tour guide will be more than happy to stop and point out all of the notable sights, in case you might miss anything.
The stable offers two different waterfall rides: one that's 2.5 hours in length and another that's four hours long. The two-hour tour passes by one waterfall; while the four-hour trek visits two waterfalls.
Much of the four-hour ride follows along the Oconaluftee River, where you'll have more than one opportunity to get your (horse's) hooves wet while crossing to the other side. You'll see two waterfalls on this longer tour.
The 2.5-hour tour takes you on a mountain path with beautiful views and a waterfall. Visit at just the right time and you'll enjoy it all amidst the vibrant colors of the changing leaves.
A few things to know before you go: all riders must be at least five years old, and kids can’t double up on a single horse (for safety reasons). The maximum weight for this tour is 240 pounds. Due to weather limitations, waterfall horseback tours at Smokemont Riding Stables are only offered from early May through early November.
