With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, it’s no surprise I have love on the mind. Of course, that love comes with a bit of nostalgia. I find myself reminiscing on past relationships. A couple in particular when I dated someone from out of state. There’s a few things I wish these past loves had known about dating a tried-and-true North Carolina girl…like these 15…
1. We KNOW how to treat someone right.
When it comes to finding that one person we absolutely adore...we'll go above and beyond to make sure you're happy. Southern hospitality is way more than just being nice to strangers...it's embodying the idea of making everyone feel like family and feel wholeheartedly loved.
2. A lot of our social gatherings revolve around food, so bring your appetite.
Maybe we have you over for dinner, you're meeting our family, or just a summertime cookout...there's always plenty of delicious food at any event. Good news is, you won't leave hungry!
3. We don't need you to take us to a fancy nightclub or trendy bar to have a good time.
Sure, we love variety and these are included - but North Carolinians know how to relax. Some of our best nights are spent around a bonfire with a few close friends.
4. We have a duality about us.
One day we'll be the most relaxed beach bums you've ever met. The next we're adventurous and wanting to hike a daring trail or find some hidden waterfalls. At least it keeps things exciting.
5. Our first love will always be the Tar Heel state.
North Carolina is more than a place to grow up; it's deeply 'home' to us. From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the OBX...every part of this beautiful state holds rich memories dear to our heart.
6. We will always be real with you.
The truth hurts, but North Carolinians know how to sugar coat the truth without sacrificing our blunt ways of being. We live by our state's motto 'To be rather than to seem.' At least you have someone who will always keep it 100% real.
7. Family comes first.
We value our families and are usually very close with our parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles...ok, everyone.
8. But this doesn't mean we don't have a few 'eccentric' family members.
Welcome to the south!
9. We LOVE sports.
Cheering on the Panthers, watching a UNC v. Duke game, baseball in the spring and even hockey in the winter. North Carolinians LOVE sports. It'd be helpful to do a quick Google search before your first date with a North Carolinian...
10. We're constantly seeking and craving new adventures.
The best way to keep your North Carolinian's heart is to always keep it interesting. Plan roadtrips, hikes, and even beach vacations. We're always on the lookout for the next big adventure and we want our partner to feel the same.
11. We love the arts.
Gallery crawls, live music, film festivals, plays, murals, even the ballet...North Carolina is an extremely artistic state so we're naturally inclined to LOVE art in all its forms.
12. Our social circles are extremely diverse.
You'll come across people from all walks of life in North Carolina. There are different types throughout the state. North Carolinians are about as diverse as the landscape.
13. We know how to charm your britches off (not literally, dirty minds!).
Momma always taught us 'you catch more bees with honey than with vinegar.' We're sweet but never pushovers. Don't underestimate a southern guy or gal.
14. Some things we say make no sense to you but perfect sense to us.
North Carolinians have their own vocabulary full of words and sayings. If you find us talking 'crazy' just ask what we mean instead of looking at us like we're a chicken with its head cut off.
15. We're the ones you'll never forget.
Like our magical, beautiful state...our people have that same ability to put you under a spell and draw you back time and time again. What can I say? We're the perfect mix of down to earth, southern, charming, and cultured. If you're lucky enough to catch a North Carolinian...never let them go!
