Traveling the length of the Hatteras Island on the lovely Outer Banks of North Carolina, is a coastal bike trail that’s as dreamy as it sounds. Running along the seashore, views of the bay and ocean greet you at every turn. You’ll want to take the whole family along to explore this famous island that offers stunning views every way you look!
If you’re looking for a bike trail that will leave you in awe, head on out to the Outer Banks.
N.C. Highway 12 spans the length of the islands, and the stretch on Hatteras Island is especially pretty and easy to bike. 25 miles long, this is a great place to spend hours cruising along the coast.
The coastal bike road starts at the Herbert C Bonner bridge.
There are so many wonderful places to see and explore on the island. Pack a picnic and your bathing suit, and make sure to hit the many beaches along the way.
You’ll pass between the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound.
The ultimate destination on this ride is the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Built over 130 years ago, it’s an impressive display of architecture built to warn sailors away from the dangerous Diamond Shoals.
On the rarest of days, you may see one of the Outer Banks’ wild horses roaming about.
While usually seen in Ocracoke or Corolla, these ponies can swim from island to island. Descended from horses brought from Spain and then shipwrecked on the islands, these horses roam around the Outer Banks and are sometimes even spotted on Hatteras Island.
