Henry River Mill Village is an abandoned little town in Hildebran, North Carolina just about an hour west of Charlotte and it’s totally creepy. Accessible via I-40 and Henry River Road, an evening drive through this town is sure to give anyone a fright.
Henry River Mill Village was a textile town that was founded in 1904.
In the early 20th century, the town thrived as it was centered around the Henry River Manufacturing Company. The company saw real boom times manufacturing cotton yarn.
During this time, approximately 30 to 40 workers' cottages were built surrounding the mill.
Other businesses were built in the town that would support the local mill workers in their daily lives. A concrete dam built next to the mill allowed the Henry River to power the company, and Henry River Mill Village saw success for a short time.
As years went by and technology advancements were made in the U.S., milling and manufacturing became less of an industry.
Workers in Henry River Village Mill were laid off and jobs became non-existent. Eventually the town's main source of business - the Henry River Manufacturing Company - closed its doors for good in 1973. Residents had begun leaving the small town as jobs dwindled, and with the close of the Mill, the population became sparse.
In 1987 the last resident of Henry River Mill Village left for good, yet most of its original buildings still stand.
Unkempt and crumbling, the buildings of the town cast a foreboding eeriness on people who visit there.
Various stories have been told about how former mill workers who have passed away haunt the town.
Some people have claimed that when walking through the town at night, things have been thrown at them from inside the abandoned mill buildings. Sticks, rocks and other objects have landed at their feet when they thought they were alone .
Another common story heard from visitors is that late at night you can hear the sound of men's voices talking throughout the town.
Even though there isn't a soul who lives there, these conversations are distinct and rapid. Many believe they are the conversations of the old mill workers whose spirits still haunt the area.
If you are brave enough to walk through one of the abandoned cottages, you will see the crumbling remains of what was once a family’s home.
Flaking paint on the walls and fallen ceiling beams make the buildings ominous and even unsafe.
This town is so chilling, it actually made the great backdrop for a popular science fiction film.
In 2012, several scenes from the feature film the Hunger Games were filmed in Henry River Mill Village. For all you Hunger Games fans out there, does District 12 look familiar?
In the movie, District 12 was a desolate coal mining town which is the home to many poor residents.
Henry River Mill Village was a mirror image to what directors envisioned, and the perfect fictional town which was home to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the movie.
Although the Hunger Games brought some excitement to Henry River Mill Village, the town still remains abandoned to this day.
Many Hunger Games fans visit frequently. Nearly all those who visit in the night experience the same ghostly phenomenons that have been reported by others.
