It doesn’t get much better than a camping trip with your family, except for when you book that trip at the Cape Hatteras KOA. Many people head to the beautiful North Carolina coast each year for vacation. Still, few realize there’s a beach-side campground the size of a small town – and it’s filled with all the amenities to make your vacation unforgettable. After spending a long weekend at this campground we can confidently say you too will fall in love with not just the Outer Banks in North Carolina but this lovely campground too.
Cape Hatteras KOA Resort is located in the tiny coastal community of Rodanthe. If you were looking for a beautiful beach getaway in the Outer Banks this is a great place to be.
Remarkedly, there are more campsites and cabins in this colossal campground than there are people in all of Rodanthe (population, 260).
At capacity, the Cape Hatteras KOA swells to the size of a small town with a population of at least 1,200 people. (That figure is based on a little over 300 campsites and cabins with an occupancy of 4 persons each.)
From their basic camper cabins (seen here) to luxury cabins, RV sites, camper spaces, and a variety of sites just for tent camping, this KOA is ready for any lifestyle.
Imagine those ocean breezes blowing in your hair for days on end — and the beach is literally only steps away. When we camped there being on the beach was one of our favorite parts, we didn't have to hop in the car and drive down the road. We simply kicked on our flip-flops and walked the boardwalk to the pristine beach.
The beach is also open for dogs which was amazing to see our puppy's first time feeling sand under his paws. He loved running back and forth, avoiding the waves, and lounging on the beach. He isn't much different from us after all.
Wake up and watch the sunrise over the ocean. Spend the morning in the zero-entry pool...
Have lunch over at your campsite or visit the on-site poolside cafe.
The amenities at this KOA are on par with just plain fabulous. Even the pooch in the family has his own playground — complete with equipment.
Other amenities include a gigantic service building that houses a camp store that has everything you'll possibly need during your stay. A game room, a cafe, and a full-size laundry are available too.
Prefer to stay in a beach lodge? The new services building has vacation suites! You can also up your camping game by staying in one of the unique glamping tents. These elevated platform tents are unlike anything we have seen at other campgrounds and offer everything you would need for a comfortable stay.
You can't go wrong with a family vacation at this colossal campground in North Carolina.
The Cape Hatteras KOA campground has one of the best locations we have seen out of any campground. The thin island it is located in means that you can see the ocean on either side. Walk the boardwalk and you are facing the vast Atlantic Ocean and on the other side, you can see the west side of the ocean. This means that the area is perfect for sunrises and sunsets so make sure you end the day on the west side of the island to witness a spectacular display before you start your nightly campfire.
