North Carolina's stunning Waterfall Byway is also known as NC-28. It extends through the Cullasaja River Gorge, following the 13-mile Cullasaja River and her spectacular waterfalls between the towns of Franklin and Highlands, North Carolina.

Along this short route (it's just a 19-mile drive between the two towns), you'll encounter some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the entire state. On the approach from Highlands, the first one you'll come across is Bridal Veil Falls, known for the short swatch of road that passes under the waterfall. This is a brilliant place to start your adventure.

Not too long ago, you could drive your car right under this waterfall. Today, unfortunately, it's closed to vehicular traffic. Don't let this stop you from visiting. Ample parking is available on both sides of the highway so guests can step out and explore the wonderful waterfall.

Next on this scenic waterfall highway is the Niagara Falls of North Carolina: Whitewater Falls.

This colossal waterfall might not be as wide as the real Niagara Falls, but you can walk behind it (without a raincoat!) and experience a thrill that's comparable to what you'll find at Niagara. Nothing beats the sounds of water pouring over and past you as it flows fervently on down the river.

Further upstream is a waterfall playground that's popular among the locals, who affectionately call this one "Bust Yer Butt Falls." Yes, you read that correctly!

From the parking area on the Waterfall Byway, you'll be able to see the pretty cascade and, in season, hear the laughter of a lively crowd below enjoying this roadside swimming hole. There's no better way to cool off when temperatures are hot.

The northernmost of the Cullasaja River Gorge's waterfalls is named for the gorge itself. Cullasaja Falls is more easily seen in the winter months, though hiking here can certainly be a challenge.

Thankfully, the falls are easily viewed from the Waterfall Byway. As previously stated, they're more conveniently viewed in the winter than the summer months.
