When you live near the coast it can be relatively easy to take fresh seafood for granted. But for those of us who don’t live on the beautiful North Carolina coast, fresh seafood is a sought after delicacy that definitely can be worth the drive to the coast JUST for the meal. Of course we always stay longer than it takes to eat one meal, but that trip can absolutely be powered by a craving for a meal freshly caught in the local waters.
The next time your tastebuds are calling for fresh seafood, head to the Outer Banks to a little unassuming restaurant in Kitty Hawk.
The world-famous Wright brothers may be responsible for bringing fame to Kitty Hawk, but the fresh seafood found in this small coastal town is one of the things that bring people back again and again.
When it comes to fresh catch in Kitty Hawk, the food found at this small market, eatery and take out joint is funtabulous. Even the name is fun: I Got Your Crabs! Seriously, that's the name.
But all joking aside for just a second... the owner of this local eatery is a local commercial fisherman. That says a lot about the seafood dished up at I Got Your Crabs. (Sorry! I can't stop saying the name — it's just so fun!)
Get a baker's dozen if you think you can handle it. Nothing is more beautiful than a fresh hot pile of steamed blue crabs doused with a shaker full of Old Bay.
By the way, I Got Your Crabs (I said it again... ) is also a seafood market, so you can get those live crabs to go — even by the bushel, if you have that many people to feed.
They'll even steam 'em for you if that makes life easier. But just know, if you want that many crabs all at once, you should probably call a day ahead and let them know so they can harvest accordingly.
Don't let the words "TAKE OUT" on the outside of the building fool you. There's plenty of room inside this eatery to stay a while and chow down right on the spot.
Other seafood found on the menu includes steamed or fried shrimp, flounder and catfish. Other steamed items include dungeness crab, king crab legs, clams, oysters and crawfish.
But whatever you order, just remember this unassuming restaurant on the North Carolina coast has got your crabs. Go ahead, have your crab and eat it too.
