The place is rooted in an exciting history as it is named after Wanchese, the last known ruler of the Roanoke Native American tribe. Its population of only about 1,900 gives plenty of space on the southern tip of Roanoke Island which, by the way, is bordered by the ocean. So a trip here definitely involves the water.
